Snap

Today, some of the ladies my mom works with dropped off my parents’ Pentax with me here in Austin.

It was the camera my dad bought on the day I was born. Almost all the pictures from my childhood were taken with this camera. Now I’m about to embark on real, grown-up life, and I get to start taking the pictures for myself.

(By the way, it takes really amazing pictures. The box still has the price tag on it, and I can’t believe my parents, in 1984 when they were both living basically in poverty, spent that much money on a camera just to take pictures of me. It makes me laugh at this point, because after all these years, I wonder if sometimes they think, “We should have saved the money we spent on the camera and started a college fund.” After all, it’s what I’ve done with a fourth of my life at this point, a fact which makes me feel slightly nauseous.)
